Well…that didn’t go according to plan

Whew! 2017 was quite a year. And unfortunately, I made a big technical uh-oh and lost the last year+ of blog posts. Whoops! So instead of trying to get all those back up, because who needs that anyways, we decided to start fresh and end the year one a note about one of the things we like(and do) best…beer. It’s been a year of ups and downs for all things running between starting new jobs, traveling, sickness and injuries. So while we didn’t get as much in as we wanted in order to complete our running goals, I think we’ve both definitely started to find our love of running again. Now, onto the good stuff! We always love a good brewery, duh, and even spent some time this year trying to branch out from our regular stops of Rahr & Martin House. Below are all of the breweries (OGs included) that we visited and what we loved about each. Plus, a list of some we’d like to try in 2018. -Rahr & Sons: like we need any explanation. They host one of our favorite monthly 5ks...

Arkansas Adventures

Arkansas. It’s actually a state I have never explored before and am so glad I got the chance to finally go because man, it was way more gorgeous than I was expecting. My dad, step-mom & I have a new tradition going that my parents decided to start a couple years ago and I am the awesome beneficiary of the adventures this brings about. Two Christmas’ ago, they decided to give each of their children & their spouses the gift of their ‘presence’ instead of ‘presents.’ BEST IDEA EVER!!! Since I’m the only single one of my family, no spouse goes along for the trip which works out in more awesome adventures for me (hahahahahaha….if they keep this up I might just stay single forever). Last summer we got to spend 5 days exploring Juneau, Alaska and this year our trip was to Devil’s Den State Park in Arkansas. We rented a cabin in Devil’s Den State Park which, while a little outdated & they definitely don’t have the most comfortable beds, is an awesome choice...

Race Season Starts!

There is a chill in the air, pumpkin spice everything is available and that can only mean one thing: Race season. Until we started running regularly and finding amazing races to do one weekend after another during the fall, we didn’t even know it was a thing. Texas heat can be brutal from May(ish) until basically the end of September so we’ll call our race season anytime that isn’t those months. We have decided, unless it is a Social/Fun Run there is no way we are racing in the Texas summer again…way TOO HOT for that kind of madness. We kicked off our race season with Deep Ellum’s first ever run, The Dallas Blonde 5K, which seemed like the perfect fit for us. Running & Beer with 20+ of our friends and coworkers was the perfect launch party for the schedule we have ahead. The race went well for us, with a PR for Bre :), and with the exception of the light rain that fell during the run it was pretty much the perfect start to what we’re about to take on. Bre is...

Jersey Shore Shenanigans

The Jersey Shore. When I first decided to move there at 23, all I pictured was the MTV show and Real Housewives. Luckily for me, I ended up in Asbury Park (if you like Bruce Springsteen that should ring a bell) and fell in love. It was nothing like either and a truly awesome place to be. I moved back to Texas 3 ½ years ago, but I was finally able to make it back for a visit and got to reunite with some of the amazing women & best friends I met while I was living there. Most of us have moved away from the shore, so for a few days I got to explore Jersey City & Hoboken which was a nice change of pace. There are a ton of cute little neighborhoods and areas around there which are so much fun to explore. My favorite part however was the skyline. I told my friends for days before coming how much I was looking forward to running along the Hudson and it did not disappoint. I’m not usually a huge fan of training and running while on vacation, because a vacation is all about resting...

Enchanted Rock Girls Getaway

GIRLS GETAWAY!!! Everyone has those moments where they just think, I have to get out of here before I punch someone in the face. We had that about a month ago, but like responsible adults, waited and planned so that we could leave with less stress haunting us. We can’t jet across the globe on such short notice and with little vacation time left. But driving somewhere in this giant state of ours and exploring somewhere we haven’t been before, was totally doable. Enchanted Rock is only 4 hours drive away and neither of us had ever hiked it before, so of course that was our first choice. In case none of y’all know what this is, google it. Just keep in mind that the pictures make it look a lot smaller than it actually feels. Once you start hiking that steep climb just keeps going and going and going. We probably made it a little more difficult by doing a sunrise hike on 3 ½ hours of sleep…oops. Bre had been told that sunrise or sunset at Enchanted Rock was amazing and one...

Misadventures

Misadventures pretty well describes these three workout classes we did over the last week. Most runners do some form of cross-training to help build up stamina, as well as be faster and stronger runners. While running is a great workout, your body can get used to the same exercise if done over and over without change and build up tolerance to it. Cross training can help that and build muscles that will benefit your body while running. At the beginning of the summer we found a few different classes that we had never tried before and would break up the monotony of the squat, lunge, burpee, repeat routine that we had fallen into. We also needed something to look forward to and get excited about, in order to beat the heat and run outside in the wild of DFW we need to get up REALLY early….and neither of us are exactly what you’d call morning people. There was Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga, Aerial Silks and Trampoline Fitness. They were all a lot of fun, but we are definitely not experts...

Light Side vs. Dark Side

Every summer there is a outdoor summer music festival tradition called Concerts in the Garden at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. It’s five weekends of music, fun and fireworks put on by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra….however not all the concerts have the symphony. There’s the Music of Pink Floyd, Green River Ordinance as well as the patriotic 4th of July Concert. So there is a little something for everyone. But it was the Star Wars concert that spoke to the nerd in us. John Williams’ best hits with a full orchestra on stage, lasers and an evening picnic with friends – could it get any better? There are even Star Wars characters that roam the garden before the concert, but we got a little distracted by beer and food so we didn’t get to take any pictures with them 🙁 We got massive quantities of food and decided to theme our beer tasting Light Side vs. Dark Side. The Light Side Deep Ellum – Dallas Blonde Austin Beerworks – Pearl Snap The Dark...

That one time with the paramedics…

Nothing kicks off summer in Fort Worth quite like Untapped, an annual outdoor festival that celebrates craft beer and up-and-coming musicians. This was Caroline’s first year and Bre’s fourth (what can she say, she really loves beer). Despite the fact that we practically live for sampling new brews, we decided against splurging on VIP passes, instead opting for the 12 tastings that came with our tickets. This year was hot. Texas summers were definitely not meant for outdoor festivals, but the allure of 300-plus beers to try with our fellow Fort Worth beer lovers was too tempting to pass on. With that said, that heat (and possibly our morning 5K) came back to bite us when Caroline passed out as soon as we walked through the entry gates. Medics were called and she was promptly carted off on a stretcher. Don’t worry — she recovered but unfortunately didn’t get to experience any beers, so she’s vowed to make it to at least three tastings next year. Once...
